Hair maintenance should not be underrated nor should it be overlooked. Hair can be kept for years if cared for and maintained properly. There are certain steps that will naturally become habitual to do so.
Always make sure your hair AIR DRIES!

The habit of using blow dryers could cost you your hair! Blow dryers dry more than water, they also dry oils and moisture out, this is why Air drying is highly recommended.

Always use Satin or silk products to wrap your hair!

The reason being is that other materials such as cotton absorb moisture leading to easily tangled, dry and brittle hair. How to tell your hair is drying up is by its ends.

When taking showers or washing face, keep he satin bonnet on the inside shower cap to reduce the amount of humidity that tends to get trapped in the shower cap. Also always secure your lace with your satin wrap when in water and even when doing makeup.

Don’t use edge controls, greases or oils to fix or maintain edges on lace, this could result in lifting. Instead, use mousse.

For curly hair do not try to detangle while dry, instead, use a soft paddle brush or wide tooth comb to detangle starting downwards going up and make sure while doing so, hair is wet!
Note: (be sure to use a leave-in conditioner of your choice)

When washing use shampoo that you would use on your own hair, I highly recommend Tresemme (luxurious moisture) shampoo and conditioner.
When rinsing the hair, ensure to use cold water because hot or even warm water will strip out its moisture.
